This is a normal building in Valparaiso. The sidewalk goes through it.

LOTS of cars were decorated for Chile’s independence day on 18 September.

Looks boring, but this is a very important building: The Port Authority of Valparaiso.

This is Ascensor Artillería, which leads to the Naval Museum.

Antibes is 20 minutes from Nice by train. Its old town is amazing — dark, twisty, under-and-over streets and archways. This part is separated from the sea by a frankly intimidating stone wall. From the Port Vauban (home to multi-million dollar yachts and sailboats), all you can see of the city is the Musee Picasso, because its in a castle at the original town’s highest point. It’s very much a seaside resort, summery place.

Place de Gaulle. It’s like a spray park – the water jets change in height!

Is that a man with a bucket of paint on his head? IS it?

First of MANY bronze statues by Nicolas Lavarenne around Antibes. This one is called Grande Arc en Ciel.

Self-serve washing machines at the port for the million-dollar yacht owners!

These are over EVERY door in the old town!

I loved the way this vine grew on the electric wiring.

Port Vauban is VERY new compared to where the Romans originally docked. It was built in the 60’s to accommodate the fancy new boats.

Photos of China: Macau Redux – the Peninsula

I couldn’t tell you. They look like bomb shelters.

We went into the Eye of Sauron – sorry the Hotel Lisboa – for dinner, and just to see WHAT was there!

THIS is the free bread that came with our dinner – one is garlic rosemary, one is chocolate brioche. Both steaming fresh.

Salmon, baked potato, and broccoli au gratin. My friend had pizza with goat cheese.

I didn’t believe these over-top, James-Bond type hotels existed!

BEHOLD Casino Lisboa’s exterior! It hurt my EYES.

THIS is the much quieter, old-school, sedate lobby of OUR hotel.

Because it’s not enough to have Catholic churches on every block.

I wish I knew what this beautiful building was. Could be an embassy or someone’s house!

Casinos ARE everywhere in Macau — many much older than those in Cotai!

Photos from China: Macau Redux – the Fortresses

Macau was, until 1999, a colony of Portugal. Macau is in — more or less — 2 parts: the Peninsula, which contain the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Historic Centre of Macau, and then there are the islands, which contain, Taipai, Cologne and Cotai.

The Portuguese built TWO major military fortresses while occupying Macau — the Fortaleza do Monte, and the Guia Fortress.
